Photo Share: First Birds of the New Year

I woke up January 1st and thought a Northern Cardinal or Dark-eyed Junco would be the first bird of the year. Imagine my surprise when I saw no birds.

A closer scan of the yard revealed a Sharp-shinned hawk perched in the pines. Then a quick flash of a Brown Creeper. Two birds that aren't common in my yard. I'm not sure what future that foretells, if any.

The word “Luck” is said to be derived from an old Anglo-Saxon verb meaning “to catch” and therefore signifies something caught. I choose to believe the hawk means I will have good luck this year.

Such a derivation seems reasonable in view of the fact that prosperity is thought by many to be dependent on fleeting opportunities that must be seized in passing. So I think the creeper zipping through the yard means I should keep my eye out for new possibilities.

Happy New Year to all!

If anyone else would like to share a photograph of nature send it to bloubird@gmail.com and I'll put it on the Friday Photo posts.
