Invasion of American Killer Squirrels

The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin
As the introduced “English” House Sparrows gather in large numbers during the winter months attacking the feeders like there is no tomorrow, I wondered if it would make people feel better if they knew that England battles with U.S. gray squirrels that were first introduced in 1876 by the Victorians, who regarded the them as an exotic species.

A squirrel you may recognize from Beatrix Potter's childrens book, the Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) is classed as the only native species to the UK. These cute mammals have a chestnut upper body, with tan underside, a fluffy tail and noticeable ear tufts.

Unfortunately the arrival of gray squirrels, classed as an invasive non-native species in the UK, has caused reduced red squirrel breeding and survival rates leading to a gradual decline in native squirrel numbers.
