Black bird with orange under wings

Eastern Towhees are strikingly marked, oversized sparrow of the East, feathered in bold black and warm reddish-browns. You'll likely see them under bushes foraging for food in the spring and fall as they migrate to forest edges, overgrown fields and woodlands, and scrubby backyards or thickets.

Towhees eat many foods including seeds, fruits, nuts and insects. At the feeder you could attract them with the sunflower, peanuts and millet in our No-mess blend.

Eastern Towhees live in Michigan from late March to mid-November. They are often heard before they are seen. The name "'towhee'" a simulation of the bird's call when disturbed. But during the spring nesting season the males sing 'drink your tea' loudly from exposed perches.
