Two easy solutions to keep your birds healthy

September has arrived and the rain and high humidity, while uncomfortable for me, can be dangerous for the birds if you don't maintain your feeders properly. Moldy seed feeders can make birds sick and dirty feeders can spread disease.

Two easy solutions to keep your birds healthy:

1. Clean your feeders at least once a month. It is super important to keep your feeders clean, especially in the spring and fall when so many birds are migrating through mid-Michigan. The stress can make birds vulnerable to disease.

Wild Birds Unlimited in East Lansing washes feeders year round. You bring your feeder in and pay $5.00. We will disassemble, soak, scrub, and reassemble your feeder and have it ready for you the next day we are open.

Our bird feeder cleaning service is so popular that we have now started a new Bird Feeder Wash Card. You just prepay $20.00 and you will receive a card that is good for 5 washes. This will give you a savings of $5.00!

2. Keep seed fresh. Wet weather can also produce mold and mildew which can be fatal to birds. To prevent mold in bad weather use Feeder Fresh™ (a silica grit that absorbs water and humidity, is safe for birds, and made from non-toxic absorbent sand). You can also shelter your feeder from the elements by using something like WBU Weather Guard.
