Photo Share: Cardinal Color

Female cardinals vary in the amount of red pigment they have on their upper breast, eyebrows, face, wings and tail. It is thought that the brighter coloration, the healthier the bird because they have a better diet. On average these brighter birds have larger clutches of eggs and a higher nest success rate.
