A scarlet bird that is yellow

Scarlet Tanager female from Wikimedia Commons
When the male Scarlet Tanager drops by my pond on his way breed in the forests, it is always a sight. The glowing red color of his body and neat black wings are hard to miss. On the other hand the female Scarlet Tanagers sometimes slips into the viburnum bush with little fanfare.

Females are olive-yellow with darker olive wings and tails. If you can learn this bird’s distinctive chick-burr call note, it’s very useful for finding both males and females.

As well as water, tanagers migrating through might stop at your suet or nut feeders.
