The name "swallowtail" refers to a tail-like extension on the edge of the hindwing that look similar to the swallow birds. The points are found on many, though not all, papilionids. The function of this tail is not known.

If anyone else would like to share a photograph of nature send it to bloubird@gmail.com with a description and permission to post it on the Friday Photo.
